Odyssey Bookstore Reopening Plan

*All plans are subject to change as new information and guidelines become available.

Odyssey Bookstore is committed to keeping both our booksellers and community safe. After multiple discussions with our booksellers about their comfort level and safety, we will be following state and county laws & guidelines as well as CDC guidelines & best practices. In the interest of transparency, we will outline our plan below for booksellers and customer reference, and will communicate any updates to the community through our website, Facebook, and Instagram. Much like the state of New York, we will open in phases, being sure to follow certain protocols, which are all outlined below.

Protocols

Handwashing and Hand Sanitzer

Booksellers:

will be required to wash their hands following CDC guidelines, which will be posted at all handwashing stations. Handwashing will be mandatory when:

  • booksellers arrive at the store

  • after handling cash or other sales transactions

  • after using the restroom

  • before and after meal preparation or lunch breaks

  • after handling trash

  • before & after bringing orders out for curbside pick up

  • after handling any deliveries

When handwashing is not a possibility, booksellers will be expected to use hand sanitizer which will be made available to them. There will be a set schedule to check the bathroom and other handwashing stations to ensure there is sufficient soap and paper towels available.

Customers:

will be asked to use provided hand sanitizer when they enter the shop.

Face Masks

Booksellers:

will be provided with masks and will be instructed to wear them any time social distancing is not possible or when customers are in the store.

Customers:

will be required to wear face masks when they come into the store for the duration of their visit.

Sanitizing

Booksellers will regularly (once per hour) sanitize surfaces, keyboards, touchscreens (if used), writing utensils, light switches, door handles, and anything else that they or customers may regularly come into contact with.

Social Distancing

In Phase 1 (and possibly Phase 2 & 3, depending on state guidelines), there will be no more than 2 booksellers present in the shop at a time and they will be expected to stay at least 6 feet away from each other at all times. One bookseller will stay at the computer/POS, while the other works on projects (such as organizing, inventory, restocking, packing up web orders, etc.). Halfway through their shift, they will switch. The bookseller at the POS will sanitize the station before switching with their coworker.

Mandatory Health Screening

Per state guidelines, booksellers will have to complete a health care questionnaire, which will include a request to confirm they have taken their temperature and they do not have a fever.  For booksellers that do not currently have access to a  thermometer, Odyssey Bookstore will provide access.

Before coming to work, Booksellers will also have to be able to answer “No” to the following questions:

  • Have you had any symptoms of Covid-19 in the past 14 days?

  • Have you had a positive test result for Covid-19 in the past 14 days?

  • Have you had close contact with someone who has been confirmed as having Covid-19 in the past 14 days?

If booksellers can answer “Yes” to any of these questions, they cannot report to work. Per the guidelines, answers will be kept in a log.

Sick Days

Our booksellers have been instructed to not come into work if they are sick or have been in contact with someone who is sick. During this time, we have committed to paying our booksellers if they must miss shifts due to COVID-19 concerns, and will pay for their testing, if needed.

Phase 1

Who is allowed in store: Booksellers only

Odyssey will be open in a limited capacity. Booksellers will be present for limited hours during the day. Customers may call the shop to inquire about inventory, pay for books over the phone, and arrange for curbside pick up. Customers may also use our website, odysseybookstore.com, to order books that can be shipped directly to their home, or, for titles we have in stock, they may arrange for curbside pickup.

No more than two booksellers will be scheduled to work at a time. They will wear face masks and follow handwashing, sanitizing, and social distancing protocols outlined above.

Markers will be placed around the store in areas booksellers will frequently occupy to designate what 6 feet of distance looks like.

Per mandatory state guidelines, anyone who enters the store will have to sign in with a name and phone number, in case contact tracing needs to be performed.

Phase 2

Who is allowed in the store: Booksellers and customers (limited access only)

Once we are permitted to safely allow customers in the store, we can come up with a more detailed plan. Though, we anticipate that:

We anticipate that initially Odyssey Bookstore will be open to the public by appointment only. One customer or small group that has been socially distancing together will be allowed per appointment. In accordance with County and State guidelines and our own assessment of what is best practice for our employees and customers, we may allow walk-in access to limited numbers of customers.

Customers will be expected to wear face masks and sanitizer their hands upon entering the store.

Per mandatory state guidelines, anyone who enters the store will have to sign in with a name and phone number, in case contact tracing needs to be performed.

No more than two booksellers will be scheduled to work at a time. They will wear face masks and follow handwashing, sanitizing, and social distancing protocols outlined above.

Plexiglass will be installed in front of the POS.

A map of the store and its sections will be made available to limit booksellers needing to leave the POS desk and break social distancing. One staff member will be present to help customers and show them around at a safe distance if customers desire.

Phase 3

Who is allowed in the store: Booksellers and customers (guidelines tbd)

We know that there will come a day when we are able to open our doors in a less limited fashion. While we don’t know when this will be, we anticipate that we will do the following when that time comes:

Booksellers will continue to wear facemasks and follow all outlined sanitizing guidelines.

Customers will be able to browse in the shop in limited numbers. They must wear a mask and use provided hand sanitizer when entering, or wear provided gloves. There will be signage on the door letting customers know if they may enter, or if we are at capacity and they must wait until someone else leaves.
